Middlesex High girls varsity basketball team lost at Mathews and defeated visiting King and Queen and Charles City in recent action.

Mathews handed visiting Lady Chargers its third loss of the season 55-48 on Friday, January 29.

The Lady Blue Devils built an 18-point lead and held off a furious Lady Charger rally en route to a win that avenged an earlier loss to Middlesex.

“You have to come ready to play four quarters at this time of the year,” said Lady Charger coach Neil Wake. “Everyone is gearing up for the stretch run and either you pick it up or you get left behind.”

The Lady Chargers got back to their winning ways on Monday, February 1, with a 50-35 win in a make-up game against the visiting King and Queen Lady Tigers.

Middlesex (11-3) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Coach Wake is hoping the win gives the Lady Chargers some momentum as they enter the home stretch of the regular season, which ends February 12 at Northumberland. “This win is hopefully something we can build on, and help us start to peak as we head into the playoffs.”

The Lady Chargers defeated Charles City 58-34 on Tuesday night.

The MHS varsity and JV girls basketball teams will be at West Point on Friday, February 5, and at Northumberland on Friday, February 12. JV games are at 5:30 p.m. and varsity games follow at 7 p.m. The W&L game scheduled for February 9 was cancelled.
