The Deltaville Deltas won both of their games last weekend. They defeated the Newport News Cardinals with a walk-off single by Robert Shermer in the bottom of the 10th inning to win 1-0, and rallied for 10 runs on Sunday to defeat the Peninsula Pirates 10-1.

With the wins, Deltaville moves to 5-2 on the season and sits in second place in the Southern Virginia Adult Baseball League (SVABL) standings, a half-game behind the Hampton Roads Hurricanes (5-1). This Saturday, the Deltas will take on the Hurricanes at Deltaville Ballpark at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Deltas will visit Hampton Roads for a 4 p.m. game.

Deltas 1, Cardinals 0
Few SVABL teams have matched up as evenly against each other than the Deltaville Deltas and Newport News Cardinals. Coming into Saturday night, the teams had met on the field 36 times—18 wins went to Deltaville, 18 wins to Newport News.

After 9 innings of brilliant pitching and defense, the teams were tied 0-0 and went to an extra 10th inning. In the bottom of the 10th with Connor Henderson on third base, Robert Shermer drove a pitch to center field and the Deltas won in walk-off fashion, 1-0.

Saturday night’s game was a true pitchers dual. Cardinal Robbie Watkins, a former Old Dominion University pitcher, hurled 9 shutout innings, scattering just 5 hits and allowing no runs. Jordan Boze of the Deltas, a rising senior pitcher for Christopher Newport University, matched Watkins into the 7th inning, scattering just 3 hits. Will Barrack, a Lancaster native who just completed his collegiate career at UMass-Boston, came on in relief, allowing no hits over 3 ⅔ innings.

The lone score came when the Deltas led off the bottom of the 10th with a pinch hit single from Henderson. Henderson was bunted to second by Brandon Light, and reached third base on a wild pitch. In a defensive strategy, the Cardinals relief pitcher tried to pitch around Shermer to intentionally walk him and set up a double play. However, the pitcher left his second pitch too close to the zone, and Shermer slammed a single into center field to score the winning run.

Barrack was the winning pitcher. Shermer led the Deltas’ offense, the only player with 2 hits in the game.

Deltas 10, Pirates 1
Deltaville won in a less stressful, but still competitive game on Sunday, defeating the Peninsula Pirates 10-1 in Williamsburg.

Deltas starting pitcher Jay Moore allowed a run in the bottom of the 1st inning on 3 hits, but settled in to retire 16 of the next 19 batters. The Deltas turned 3 double plays involving middle infielders Adam Baldwin and Alexander Crittenden.

Deltaville came back from the 1-0 deficit starting in the 3rd inning when a long triple by Travis Crump scored Brandon Light.

The Deltas took the lead in the 6th, scoring 2 runs. They extended the lead to 6-1 in the 7th. After being held scoreless in the 8th, Deltaville tacked on 4 more runs in the 9th to seal the victory.

Moore picked up the win on the mound, while Zach Harris pitched 2 hitless innings of relief. Crump led the Deltas offense, scoring 3 times on 2-for-3 hitting and 2 walks.
