The Deltaville Deltas out-pitched and out-hit the York Cannons last weekend, winning both Saturday night’s home matchup and Sunday’s away game by identical scores of 7-2.

With the wins, Deltaville moved to 3-0 on the young season, while the Cannons fell to 1-3.

This weekend, the Deltas take on the defending league champion Newport News Cardinals. The Cardinals (2-0) host the Deltas on Friday night in Newport News. On Saturday night, the Deltas host the Cardinals at Deltaville Ballpark, with first pitch at 7:30 p.m.

The Deltas defeated the Cannons Saturday, riding the arms of pitchers Jay Moore and Will Barrack.

The Deltas took advantage of 12 walks, converting half of the free passes into runs. Deltaville scored in 3 of the first 4 innings, and after the Cannons scored a run in both the 4th and 5th innings, the Deltas were not seriously threatened the rest of the game.

On Sunday, Reggie Johnson struck out 13 Cannons, and Scott Crump and Rob Shermer each homered as the Deltas completed the weekend sweep of the Cannons.

The Cannons scored a pair of runs in the 7th, but Shermer hit a solo home run for insurance in the top of the 9th to seal the win.

Johnson notched his first pitching victory of the season, and Smiley Smith pitched the final 3 innings to earn the save. In addition to the home runs from Crump and Shermer, Colby Wiggins and Light helped lead the offense on 3-for-5 hitting.
