The top-seeded and regular season champion Deltaville Deltas defeated the 5th-seeded VBA 61’s in their opening game of the Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVBL) tournament on Saturday night 3-2, but fell to the 2nd-seeded Newport News Cardinals 5-0 on Sunday.

With the loss in the double-elimination tournament, the Deltas must play from the losers’ bracket this weekend to capture their first SVBL title.

In all, three teams advanced to the final weekend of the tournament. The Deltas will face the 61’s again this Saturday night in the final losers’ bracket game, as the 61’s bounced back to eliminate the 3rd-seeded Peninsula Pirates on Sunday. The winner of the Deltas-61’s game will take on the Cardinals on Sunday at Christopher Newport University, needing to beat them twice to claim the championship. Sunday’s games will start at 1 p.m. at Captains Park in Newport News.

Saturday night’s game will be played at a neutral site in Williamsburg. The Deltas Facebook page will be updated with tournament results, and report on whether the Deltas will play for the championship on Sunday.

Deltas 3, VBA 61’s 2
Deltaville plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, and Jay Moore and Will Barrack combined to scatter 8 hits on the mound as the Deltas held on to win 3-2 against the VBA 61’s on Saturday night.

Cardinals 5, Deltas 0
Deltaville’s offense struggled to find a rhythm on Sunday, and despite getting 12 runners on base and 6 in scoring position, was unable to crack the Newport News Cardinals, falling 5-0.
