Deltas crush the Peninsula Cardinals 13-1
by Stephen Blue
Luke Saunders blasted 3 extra-base hits, and Jay Moore pitched a complete game, leading the Deltaville Deltas past the Peninsula Cardinals 13-1 on Sunday.
The win kept Deltaville (9-1, 11-3) on top of the Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVABL) standings, one game ahead of the second place York Cannons (9-3).
Deltaville will host the Cannons this Saturday, July 4, at Deltaville Ballpark for the Heritage Day game. The contest will begin at 5 p.m., and will be followed by the Deltas Old-Timers Game at about 7:30 p.m., and a July 4th fireworks display at 9 p.m.
The Deltas offense took a slow and steady approach on Sunday, scoring runs in 6 of the 9 innings played. Saunders doubled twice and blasted a towering home run over the fence, near the 400-foot mark in center field.
Jonathon Somers and Tim Grandy each doubled and singled, and Neal Hogge singled twice. Brett Crawford and Jimmy Denny each had singles.
Moore (3-0, 1.47 ERA) was fantastic on the mound for Deltaville. The Deltas veteran scattered 7 hits over 9 innings, allowing just one run. He struck out 8 and walked none in earning his third win of the season.
