The Middlesex Colts youth football teams kicked off their third season this week when practice began Monday on the Middlesex Elementary School athletic fields at Locust Hill.
The Colts are comprised of four teams: Mites, 6-7 year olds; Mighty Mites, 8-9 year olds; Midgets, 10-11; and Juniors, 12-14. There are a total of 105 players on the four teams.
“This is the most players we’ve had come out in the three years,” said Tommy Hamilton, spokesperson for the league’s board of directors.
“We are very appreciative to the board of directors of the Middlesex County Sports Complex and to the Middlesex County School Board for providing us with an alternative location to play our home games,” said Hamilton. “Our league is a community effort,” he said. “It takes the cooperation of children, parents, coaches, sponsors and many other volunteers to make all this work.
“Football teaches children that when they get knocked down, to get right back up and go back out there and try again,” he said.
The Colts’ first three games this season will be at home. The opener will be on Saturday, August 31.
