Colts earn academic honors

The Peninsula Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization (PYFCO) recently honored 76 Middlesex Colts youth football players and cheerleaders for their academic achievements.

Academic All-Stars recipients are determined by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 and above for the previous school year in the core subjects, such as reading, math, social studies and science. Silver Awards are presented to children with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.5; Gold Awards are presented to children with a GPA of 3.51 and above.

Among the 16 leagues in the PYFCO, the Middlesex Colts ranked first for the third year in a row in the highest percentage of football players and cheerleaders achieving this lofty status. There were nearly 3,000 players and cheerleaders participating in the PYFCO this year.

The Mites football players honored include: Garrett Brown-Gold, Cameron Byers-Gold, Carter Croxton-Gold, Hunter Fochtmann-Gold, Xavier Hosmer- Gold, Bailey McDearmon- Gold, Jackson Murray-Gold, Nathan Powell-Gold, Thomas Roane-Gold, Daniel Snyder-Gold, Tazewell Rae-Silver, Geion Reed-Silver, and Peter West-Silver.

The Mighty Mites football players honored include: Brandon Barney-Gold, Quinta Bromley Jr.-Gold, Talon Cheatham-Gold, Mason Curles-Gold, Michael Hammond-Gold, Cole Harris-Gold, Phillip Hart-Gold, Liam Horsley-Gold, Kalob Knight-Gold, Jacob Marx-Gold, Owen Miller-Gold, Shawn Seawell-Gold, William Walker-Gold, Thomas Wilson-Gold, Cody Woods-Gold, Marcus Billups- Silver, Cameron Bunns- Silver, Mason Hensley-Silver, Jayden Kidd-Silver, Jakim Lomax- ilver, Arik Roane-Silver, Cole Thacker-Silver, and Cassidy Ward-Silver. 

The Midgets football players honored include: Michael Barney- Gold, Wyatt Brown-Gold, Jo’Mari Gonzalez-Gold, Matthew Hart-Gold, Neaven Johannsen-Gold, Darnell Mundin-Gold, Cole Ruark-Gold, Hunter Snyder-Gold, Matthew Wilson-Gold, Tyrell Key-Silver, Landon Norwood-Silver, Nathan Shaw-Silver, Adam Smith-Silver, and Frederick West, IV-Silver.

The Juniors football players honored include: Kian Cheatham-Gold, Thomas Hamilton III-Gold, Cameron Morgan-Gold, Cole Radabaugh-Gold, Tyler Radabaugh-Gold, Jaden Reed-Gold, Jack Ruark-Gold, Logan Snyder-Gold, Josh Ware-Gold, Zach Burch-Silver, Elijah Darnell-Silver, Thomas Redmon-Silver, Shane Sexton-Silver, and Dylan Wells-Silver.

The cheerleaders honored include: Kaitlyn Barney-Gold, Ella Hodges-Gold, Keira Kamm-Gold, Morgan Milby-Gold, Kacie Moreno-Gold, Jada Mundin-Gold, Caroline Painter-Gold, Delaney Ruark-Gold, Arviette Underwood-Gold, Clarista Hampton-Silver, Lyndsey Holmes-Silver, and Tiffany Mott- ilver.

“The Middlesex County of Virginia Youth Football Association is very proud of the young student athletes and hope the 2014 season brings even more honors for Middlesex youth Academic All-Stars,” said a team spokesperson. “A special thank you goes to Middlesex County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, St. Clare Walker Middle School Principal Tracy Seitz and SCW Secretary Vicki Davis, Middlesex Elementary School Principal Amy Stamm, and MES secretarie, Barbara Staib and Kim Bagby for assisting with this recognition. 

As a reminder to players, cheerleaders, and coaches, the Middlesex Colts will participate in the Urbanna Christmas Parade this Friday, December 6. The parade lineup is at 5:30 p.m. at Bon Secours.
