Chargers host Pointers Friday

The Mathews varsity boys basketball team handed host Middlesex a 65-54 Tidewater District loss on Monday.
It was a tale of two halves. Mathews led 26-25 at halftime, but in the third quarter the Chargers opened a 10-point lead before Mathews went on a scoring binge with 15 unanswered points for a 52-47 lead.
Jacob Self led the Chargers with six 3-point goals in 12 attempts and totaled a career-high 24 points in the game. Self and D’Angelo King each collected 5 rebounds, and King also had 4 steals.
Point guard Marquez Holmes scored 18 points on 7 for 17 shooting and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Chargers; center Kaleb Wake was good for 4 points and 6 rebounds; Andre Campbell added 6 points and 3 rebounds; and Brett Carter had 2 points.
The loss dropped the Chargers to 3-2 in Tidewater District play and 7-7 overall.
The JV and varsity Chargers face a grueling schedule with four make-up Tidewater District games over a seven-day span.
On Thursday, February 6, Middlesex visits King and Queen.
On Friday, February 7, the Chargers host West Point for Senior Night.
On Monday, February 10, Middlesex hosts King William.
On Thursday, February 13, the varsity only travels to Chesterfield Community High School for a 7 p.m. game.
The Chargers wind up their regular season at Mathews on Saturday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the game, the Charger JV play Mathews at 6 p.m., and the Middlesex JV girls play the JV Lady Blue Devils at 4 p.m.
The Tidewater District tournament starts on Monday, February 17.
