The Middlesex varsity boys basketball team roared to a 33-16 halftime lead and went on to rout West Point 64-38 for its first win of the season Tuesday night.

Junior forward Jaden Reed scored 25 points to pace the Chargers, Alex Bullock had 2, Logan Snyder 10, Mitchell Curtiss 8 and Neven Johansen 2.

‘I’m pleased that we continued to play hard throughout the game without slippage,” said MHS coach Jon Hatch. “Everyone contributed but Alex, Logan and Thomas really stepped up their game. Neven Johansen showed his potential as well. They earned this win as their practice work ethic continues to strengthen.”

On January 4, Charles City rallied from a 3-point deficit with three minutes to play to hand Middlesex a 67-58 loss.

“We lost some fifty-fifty balls that came back to hurt us in the end,” said MHS coach Jon Hatch.

Reed scored a career high 27 points to pace the Chargers. Bullock scored 9 points, Snyder 8, Curtiss 7, Diggs 3, and Legend Watson and Shawn Jackson 2 apiece.

On January 3 at MHS, a tall Hampton Roads Academy (HRA) team downed Middlesex 68-47. The Chargers trailed by 11 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter but HRA pulled away down the stretch behind its strong inside game.

Reed tallied 16 points to pace MHS, Snyder and Curtiss scored 10 each, Bullock 5, Jackson 3, Johansen 2, and Diggs 1.

The Chargers will play Nandua at home on Friday, January 11, and will host Gloucester on Saturday, January 12. The JV games start at 5:30 p.m. and are followed by the varsity games at 7 p.m.
