Yielding nine walks, six errors and seven unearned runs spelled doom for the Middlesex High varsity baseball team in an 11-6 district loss to Colonial Beach on April 30.

Mike Eades started on the mound for the Chargers. In the first inning a crucial Middlesex error gave an extra out to the Drifters, who scored five runs, with only one earned.

Mason Goodrich took over pitching duties starting the second inning. He went 4 2/3 innings and gave up 2 runs (one earned).

Harley Moore pitched the final inning and gave up an unearned run and struck out 3. He allowed 2 hits.

Goodrich led the MHS offense, reaching base 4 times and scoring 4 runs. Goodrich clubbed a solo homer in first inning, a 2-run home run in the sixth inning and also had a single. He also scored after reaching first base when he was hit by a pitch.

“Mason had a good day,” said Charger head coach Tim Blake.

Chuckie Morris and Alexander Crittenden both had 2 singles, and Malcolm Ward singled in 2 runs.

“Their pitcher walked 8, but we couldn’t knock them home,” said Blake. “We left too many on base and we couldn’t get the hits when we needed them. Colonial Beach is playing a lot better than the first time we played them.”

The loss drops Middlesex to 4-2 in the Tidewater District and 6-4 overall.

Tuesday’s home game against district-leading King William, whose only district loss was to Middlesex, was postponed due to rain. The game will be played May 14 at 5 p.m. in Deltaville.

The Chargers will host district opponent Mathews at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, in Deltaville. The game will be preceded by a JV game between the two schools at 5 p.m.

MHS will host the Tidewater District Tournament at Deltaville ballpark on Friday, May 15; Tuesday, May 19; and Thursday, May 21.
