Chargers even mark at 9-9

The Middlesex High varsity boys basketball team posted a 57-39 Conference 42 win against King and Queen and also defeated King William 41-36 in recent action, but lost 68-48 at Charles City and 66-37 to conference foe West Point.

The Chargers play at Mathews on Saturday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in their regular season finale. The JVs play at 6 p.m.

Kaleb Wake led the Chargers with 10 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and blocked a shot in the win over visiting King William (9-9) on February 10.

Marquez Holmes added 9 points and 6 steals, and made 3 of 4 free throws. Jacob Self scored 6 points on a pair of 3-pointers and collected 10 rebounds.

D’Angelo King had 6 points, 8 rebounds and a steal; Brett Carter got 4 points and 5 rebounds; Brandon Sjolie hit a 3-pointer; Zebulon Burrell tallied 3 points; Gregory Robinson had 5 rebounds, and Chris Blake grabbed 4 rebounds.

Middlesex 57,
King and Queen 39
Self hit a trio of 3-pointers en route to scoring 20 points in the Chargers’ win at King and Queen on February 6. Self, who hit 7 of 10 free throws, also hauled in 10 rebounds.

Carter added 9 points; Sjolie was good for 7 points including a 3-pointer; Robinson had 6 points, made all 4 of his free throw attempts, and collected 5 rebounds; Andre Campbell had 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals; King hit all his free throws for 4 points and also had 5 rebounds; and Wake had 3 points and 4 rebounds.

Burrell made 2 free throws; and Chris Blake hit a free throw and made 3 steals.

West Point 66,
Middlesex 37
On February 7 Sjolie led Middlesex against visiting West Point (8-9) with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Self was good for 10 points, including a 3-pointer, 5 rebounds and 7 steals; Carter added 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; King had 3 points and 7 rebounds; Wake contributed 3 points and 9 rebounds; with 2 points each were Blake and Robinson.

Charles City 68,
Middlesex 48
Self hit for 15 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 steals in the Chargers’ non-conference loss at Charles City (8-8) on February 4.

Sean Johnson added 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and got 2 rebounds; Carter had 10 points and 3 rebounds; Campbell, 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; Robinson and King, 2 points and 2 rebounds apiece.

The Conference 42 Tournament begins on Tuesday, February 18 and concludes on Saturday, February 22, at Charles City. Pairings will be announced after this weekend’s games.
