Chargers edge Raiders 27-21

The Middlesex High varsity football team downed Rappahannock 27-21 last Friday behind the 3-touchdown, 165-yard rushing performance of fullback Dale Smith.
The win evened the Chargers’ record at 2-2.
Smith scored the winning touchdown on a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Stone Shores added the extra point kick.
Craig Conley recovered a Raider fumble with 22 seconds left to seal the win for MHS.
Rappahannock hit paydirt first with 27 seconds left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
Middlesex came out strong in the second quarter and scored early on a 5-yard touchdown run by Smith.
RHS came right back and scored on a 9-play, 41-yard scoring drive.
Jeremy Rich, who rushed for 83 yards on 7 carries, scored the next touchdown for the Chargers. Smith made good on the 2-point conversion run to tie the game 14-14 at half.
The third quarter had Middlesex scoring first on a 22-yard run by Smith, and Rappahannock answering on a 12-play, 74-yard scoring drive. The Raiders were good on their extra point kick to take a 21-20 lead.
The Chargers offense and defense took charge in the fourth quarter. The defense shut out Rappahannock and the offense put one more touchdown on the scoreboard to take home a 27-21 win.
Malcolm Holmes had 31 yards rushing; Chris Chamberlain, 36 yards; Raheem Lockley, 28 yards; Chuckie Morris, 3 yards; and Conley, 3 yards.
At quarterback, Morris completed one pass for 17 yards to Smith, and Lockley had 4 attempts with no completions.
The Chargers (2-2) will host Lancaster at 7 p.m. this Friday, October 9, at MHS in Saluda.
