Chargers begin tournament play

The Middlesex High varsity boys basketball team succumbed to Mathews’ late rally and lost 61-55 on Saturday.

The Chargers led 31-22 at the half in the Conference 42 game at Mathews.

In the fourth quarter, Mathews trailed 46-40 but then reeled off 11 straight points to take a 51-46 lead with about four minutes to play.

Marquez Holmes led the Chargers with 27 points as he hit 4 of 7 three-point attempts. Holmes also hauled in 10 rebounds.

Jacob Self made a trio of three-point shots and finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Treyvon Hooks made 2 of the Chargers’ 7 steals. Kaleb Wake added 6 points, 3 rebounds and a steal. D’Angelo King had 4 points and 6 rebounds. Andre Johnson hit a three-pointer. Sean Johnson was good for 2 points and 5 rebounds.

“Conference 42” has replaced the Tidewater District designation. There are six teams including King & Queen, Mathews, Middlesex, West Point, Charles City and Chesterfield Community.

The Chargers (4-5, 9-10) hosted King and Queen on Wednesday, February 19 in the first round of the Conference 42 Tournament.

The semifinal will be held on Friday, February 21, on the home court of the higher seed.

The championship will be at Charles City High School on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. The girls championship is at 6 p.m.
