The Middlesex High School wrestling team finished second to Mathews in the Tidewater District tournament last Friday.

The Chargers lost to the strong Mathews team 53-28, and defeated King William 60-24 in the MHS gym.

The Chargers had their best season (12-6) in school wrestling history.

In Friday’s championship meet, Cameron Wines, Middlesex’s top wrestler, was upset by a King William wrestler in the 119-pound division.  However, Wines came back to win his match 9-7 against Mathews.

“Cameron showed a lot of heart,” said coach Lee Anderson. “Fighting sickness and a bloody nose, he still came back and won a big match for us.”

Against the Blue Devils, Alex Pratt of Middlesex won his match in the 171-pound division by pinning his opponent in 1:56.

Craig Conley had an outstanding match for the Chargers. He won the 189-pound division by pinning his opponent in 18 seconds.

John Shaw and Corey Keeling were the other division winners (Mathews did not have competitors in those size divisions). Shaw wrestled in the 103-pound division and Keeling in the 215-pound division.

In the Middlesex win over the Cavaliers, Linwood Cannon won his match in the 112-pound division by pinning his opponent in 1:11; Chris Brooks pinned his opponent in the 130-pound division in 1:58; Ean Reed got a pin in 47 seconds in the 160-pound division; and Brian Insley won his match 12-8 in the 140-pound division.

Shaw, Austin Bushong, Pratt, Conley, Keeling and Jay Bryant all got wins as King William did not have opponents in their weight divisions.

This Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, the Chargers will compete in the Region A meet at Mathews High School. Matches begin at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.

On Feb. 20-21 MHS will compete in the State Group A meet at the Salem Civic Center in Salem.

“We are very excited about the regional meet coming up this week at Mathews,” said Coach Anderson. “We are expecting some good wrestling out of our team.”
