Charger harriers gain valuable experience at W&M Invitational
The Middlesex High School cross-country teams ran in the William & Mary Invitational on Saturday at the Eastern State Hospital course in Williamsburg.
The Lady Chargers had runners in the JV girls and boys races and the A varsity girls and A varsity boys races. In the varsity A girls race, Leigh Harrow ran a swift 3.2 miles in 21:17 to take 27th place. Molly Breidenbaugh of Trinity Episcopal won the race in 18:49.20.
Middlesex’s Molly Brown finished 108th (28:57) and Grace Rutkowski was 109th (31:16).
There also were varsity girls and boys races. Most Region A and Group A runners ran in the varsity B races. If Harrow had run with other Region A runners in that race, her time would have put her in third place.
In the varsity A boys race, Ridge Ellis finished 36th out of 134 runners. Ellis ran the 3.2-mile course in 17:48. Alex Fleckenstein of Maggie Walker High School in Richmond won the race in 16:01.5.
If Ellis had run in the varsity B race with other Group A runners, his time would have placed him in fifth. By running in the varsity A competition with Group AA and Group AAA schools it gives varsity runners a taste of what they will experience at the state level later in the season.
As a boys team, MHS finished 18th overall with 500 points. Charger Simon Urban finished 123rd (21:32); Bobby Nazarini was 127th (22:04); Kyle Forst, 130th, (22:48.70); Tanner Johannsen, 131st, 23:19.60; and Tarik Audain, 134th, 24:10.7.
In the JV girls race, 8th-grader Michaela Chowning medaled by finishing sixth among 145 runners with a personal best time of 22:55.60. The top 10 runners in each race received medals.
The winner of the race was Anna Latzko of River Hill High School in Clarksville, Md., with a time of 22:03. Mathews High School runner Emma Hudgins was second (22:32.60); Aideen Channing of Deep Run High School in Henrico, third, (22:42.90); and Kirsten Kruus of River Hill, fourth, (22:43.40).
Northumberland High runner Rain Eguiguren had a photo finish to edge out Chowning to take fifth place (22:55.40).
Eighth-grader Will Howard finished 34th in the JV boys race with a time of 20:03. Robert Koch of Forest Park won the JV race (18:22.6) and Dominic Mandile of River Hill was second (18:28).
The Chargers and Lady Chargers will run in the Maymont X-Country Festival this Saturday, September 28, at Maymont Park in Richmond.
