The Christchurch School field hockey team won a 3-1 overtime match against Northumberland in recent action.
The Indians jumped to a 1-0 halftime lead. The Seahorses had several shots on goal by Kelly Nelson, but were stopped by Northumberland’s powerful defense.
With eight minutes left in the game, Christchurch passed the ball toward Northumberland’s goal and, with an amazing effort in the goal area by each player, Maddie Huie scored for CCS to tie the game 1-1.
Regulation time ran out and so the two teams faced 10 minutes of overtime. Confidence rose for the Seahorses, as Coach Armento reminded the players, “This will be like practice when we play 6 on 6 during keep away!”
Once Nelson gained possession, she dribbled the ball down the field and hit the ball out of the goalie’s reach into the goal.
A short time later, the ball again reached Northumberland’s goal area and Nelson received a pass to the post, and re-directed the ball for CCS’s third goal before the time ran out.
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, the Christchurch field hockey team returned to campus to ring the bell in the Bell Tower on Headmaster Hill, signaling the victory over Northumberland.
