CCS Seahorses are state sailing champs

The Christchurch Sailing Team won the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association State Fleet-Racing Championship last Saturday in Norfolk, outracing Norfolk Academy, Norfolk Collegiate, Poquoson High School, Kecoughtan, Walsingham Academy, Nansemond Suffolk, Hampton/Phoebus, St. Catherine’s, Maury High School, Smithfield High School, St. Christopher’s and Hampton Roads Academy to finish the season undefeated!

Christchurch School senior Kyle Burgess, son of Sally and Wayne Burgess of Devonshire, Bermuda was unanimously voted Sailor-of-the-Year and named to the All-VISA team.

Other CCS sailors named to the All-VISA team were Christian Johannsen (skipper), son of Wendy Johannsen of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL and Christian Johannsen of Coral Gables, FL; Annabel Carrington (crew), daughter of Johanna and Tazewell Carrington of White Stone; and Carter Little (crew), son of Lynne and Nevan Little of Charlotte, NC.

Sophomore Jack Elkin, son of Jane and Jack Elkin of Urbanna, was recognized for a breakout performance.

The team now qualifies to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association Fleet-Racing Championship in Rochester, NY this weekend.

The team is coached by Isaac Clark.
