Blue Devils edge Chargers for Tidewater District track crown

Marquez Holmes wins three events

The Middlesex High School (MHS) boys track team finished second in team competition at the Tidewater District track meet at West Point High School on May 10. Mathews High School won the meet with 151 points and the Chargers had 142.

The Chargers were paced by senior Marquez Holmes who won three events—shot put (43’), long jump (22’7”) and triple jump 43’9”. Holmes scored 30 points.

Sean Johnson won the high jump (6’) and the 100-meter high hurdles (16.10). Manny Fernandez won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a personal best time of 43.42.

Jamal Jones was second in discus (112’11”) and third in shot put (39’9”); Tim Wilson, discus, fourth (107’ 2”); Jordan Blake, shot put, sixth (36’ 9”); Raquan Marshall, triple jump, fifth (38’5”); and Wayne Taylor, triple jump, sixth (36’8”).

Also, Johnson, long jump, second (21’7”), and 300-meter hurdles, third (45.95); R. Marshall, long jump, fifth (19’6”); Tanner Johannsen, high jump, third (6’), and 800 meters, fifth (2:24). Johannsen was awarded third in the high jump because he had less jump misses than Johnson and Ja’Twon Hence of King and Queen, both of whom also jumped 6’.

The Middlesex 4x800 meter relay team of Reginald Carter, Michael Epps, Fernandez and Johannsen finished third (9:29.43); and 4x400 meter relay team of Carter, Jalon Morris, Epps and Wilson finished third (4:00.87).

The MHS 4x100 meter relay team of Demarcus Key, Morris, R. Marshall and Taylor finished third (47.11); Demetre South finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (46.03) and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (18.60); Will Howard, 3200 meters, third (11.47), and 1600 meters, sixth (5.11.37); Tyler Radabaugh, 3200 meters, fifth (12:43); and Ellis Clayton, 3200 meters, sixth (14:18).

Mathews won the meet with 151 points; Middlesex, second, 142 points; King William, third, 75; West Point, fourth, 52; King and Queen, fifth, 45; and Charles City, sixth, 18.

The Chargers participated in the Conference 42 meet on Wednesday, May 18, at Charles City High School.
