Last Saturday the Middlesex Colts opened their 2013 season versus a strong Gloucester Red team at the Middlesex Sports Complex in Locust Hill in front of a large enthusiastic crowd.
Headlining the day for the Colts were the feisty Midgets team led by coach Fred West. The Colt Midgets played to a tough, hard-fought 12-12 tie against the 2012 playoff-qualifying Gloucester squad.
After three scoreless quarters and with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game, the Gloucester quarterback completed a desperation 4th-down touchdown pass for a 6-0 Red lead. The conversion attempt failed.
With only 2 minutes remaining, the cool and collected Colts, led by quarterback Adam Smith, methodically drove down the field. With tension mounting, Colt tailback Tyrell Key rumbled 14 yards to paydirt to tie the contest 6-6.
The heated battle then went into overtime. In the first OT period neither team could muster a score. In the second OT, versatile all-purpose back Isaiah Burse snuck around the right side of the vaunted Gloucester defense on 4th down to put the Colts ahead 12-6. The conversion attempt failed.
On its next possession, Gloucester Red once again completed a desperation pass in the end zone to tie the score 12-12. On the conversion attempt, Burse made the play of the game for the Colts by stuffing the Gloucester runner at the line of scrimmage to preserve the tie.
This Saturday, September 7, the Coilts will host Williamsburg Gold.
