Middlesex High athletics win top district honors
The Traveling Trophy is the highest award given by our district. This trophy goes to the school that accumulates the most points at the conclusion of the athletic season. “This is the first time in many years that we have won the Traveling Trophy,” said MHS athletic director Brad Norris.
06.17.2009Moore, Newton pitch Deltaville into 1st place
Strong pitching from starters Mike Newton and Jay Moore propelled the Deltaville Deltas past the Yorktown Cannons twice last weekend, 4-1 and 9-3. The pair of wins moved Deltaville into sole possession of first place in the Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVBL) with a 6-1 league mark and 7-2 overall record.
06.17.2009First place Mariners host Tigers Saturday
The Middle Peninsula Mariners improved their overall record to 8-1 with 6-4 and 5-3 wins over the Richmond Rams on Saturday. Middle Peninsula now holds a two-game lead in the Virginia Baseball League standings with a 7-1 league record. This Saturday, Middle Peninsula will host the Tappahannock Tigers in a 6 p.m. doubleheader. Admission is $7 for adults; kids 12 and under are admitted free.
06.17.2009King’s grand slam sparks Deltas
Most would consider a 5-run lead in the last inning a comfortable margin. Sunday afternoon, Chris King wasn’t quite comfortable enough. The Deltaville Deltas left fielder drove a bases-loaded pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, capping a 5 for 5 day and closing the door on the Peninsula Pirates, 13-4.
