The Essex Trojans showed why they are one of the favorites to win the Northern Neck District with a 68-40 win over Middlesex in Saluda Monday night.

An aggressive Group AA James Monroe team started quick in the title game and Middlesex was not ready, said MHS coach William Griffin. “Their guards were too fast for us,” he said. “We were in awe of them. We missed some open opportunities, we were flat, and they were going after everything.”

A basket by Middlesex’s Malik Henderson tied the game at 35-35 with a minute to play, and a free throw by Ryheem Lockley gave the Chargers a 36-35 lead with 17 seconds to play, but the Trojans scored in the final seconds to seize the win.
12.11.2008CCS hosts Stone Memorial Tourney this weekend
The Christchurch School basketball team will host the John Stone Memorial Tournament on Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13. Games are at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Competing teams include Christchurch, Gar-Field, Paul VI, and Trinity Christian of North Carolina.

Behind a full-court press, the Lady Chargers bolted to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and built a 41-25 lead by halftime. “Every girl was aggressive on the press and hustling,” said Middlesex head coach William Griffin. “I played every girl in the first half.”
