Over 4,000 pack park for “Scary Halloween”

A record crowd of over 4,000 Halloween fun and candy seekers of all ages attended the annual “Scary Halloween in the Park” last Saturday at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park in Deltaville.

“We had at least twice as many folks as we have ever had before. For the first time, parking filled the lot across the street and about half of the Wildflower Meadow lot,” said event co-director Lynn Burnett. “Not counting what the businesses brought, the museum had over 6,000 pieces of candy on hand. We only had about 50 pieces left at the end, and we had started to ration early.

We could not have done this without all the businesses and volunteers. Whew! My back is still sore from carrying the resupply basket.”

The hayrides through the “Meadow of Menace” ran full continuously from before 6 p.m. until the end of the event.

“Stephen Blue and the other volunteers did a wonderful job with the ‘Terrible Tunnel’ and other creepy decorations around the Meadow. We will definitely run a second hay wagon next year. We always had a long line,” said wagon driver and park director Kyle Jenkins.

Marie Wilding of Deltaville had her first experience helping out in the super scary “Wailing Woods.”

“I couldn’t believe how much fun it was,” said Wilding. “I not only got to see all the costumes, but it was really something to watch the different reactions to the scary stuff.”

Last minute volunteers for Halloween were Vicki Blake, Bonnie Hunter, Christy Brownley, Norview Marina, Bella’s Pizza, Middlesex Farm Bureau, West Marine, Cafe by the Bay, Brown’s Marina, Lee Maurer, HTM, Evelyn Turner, Revere Gas, Zimmerman Marine, Scott’s Auto Repair, Harmony Grove Baptist Church, Susan and Clayton Neal, and Virginia Motor Speedway.
