Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department Crab Feast
imageA record crowd of 585 attended the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department Crab Feast last Saturday on the firehouse grounds in Urbanna. The annual crab feast is one of the major fundraisers for the fire department. Supporters feasted on steamed crabs, french fries, hot dogs, hamburgers and ice-cold soft drinks and beer. Later in the evening they enjoyed live music by Jumbo Lump Daddy and the Backfin Boys. (Photos by Tom Hardin)

A conservation lesson filled with fun and fish
Middlesex County is nearly surrounded by water, but many local children have never fished from a boat or even been in a boat on the water. The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) fixed that for 19 such children on Saturday when it took them on a fishing adventure aboard a charter boat. The kids, ages 10-16, enjoyed seeing different species of fish that were caught, including a small shark.

A Saturday at the Urbanna Farmers’ Market
There is something for everyone at the Urbanna Farmers' Market. Over 40 vendors attended the event this past Saturday, August 14, at Taber Park in Urbanna. Market-goers enjoyed a variety of fresh produce, house and garden items, fine arts and crafts, live music and good food.

Norris Bridge painting ahead of schedule
Work on the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge is ahead of schedule, according to VDOT inspector John Gaby. The freshly-painted sections of the bridge stand in stark contrast to the unpainted portions. This slideshow includes photos of the progress and interviews with project supervisors.

Opti Nationals Descend on Deltaville
Opti Nationals is a major event, where over 300 young sailors compete for national honors, said co-chair of the event Noel Clinard of Fishing Bay Yacht Club. The Optis are 8-foot long dinghy sailboats piloted by youngsters. Races were held near the mouth of the Piankatank River in the Chesapeake Bay.
