Ware Academy celebrated the school’s 60th graduating class with its annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, June 4, at Ware Episcopal Church.
The guest speaker was Karen Barefoot, head women’s basketball coach for Elon University. Barefoot delivered an empowering speech about reaching goals in this competitive time by a continued passion for learning, creating and capitalizing on opportunities, visualizing one’s future and to expect nothing, but give everything.
Barefoot has been a head coach for 12 years and has served as an assistant coach for only three years before being promoted. She has led her teams to seven national tournament appearances, winning one national championship and has been named National Coach of the Year twice. In addition, her teams have won four conference championships and she has two Hall of Fame inductions to her credit.
“We are proud of all our graduating classes, but this class being the 60th graduating class marks a special occasion in the school’s history,” said head of school Tom Thomas. “Each member of the Class of 2010 fulfills our ‘Portrait of a Graduate,’ and I am confident that our boys and girls will be excellent ambassadors for Ware Academy and their respective secondary schools.”
These graduates received the following awards: Emily Brown, Faculty Award; Caroline Henderson, Headmaster’s Award; Patrick Murphy, The Founders’ Award; Mason Kelly, The Citizenship Award; Jeremy Herrin, Ware’s Male Sportsmanship Award; Jacqueline Stewart, Ware’s Female Sportsmanship Award; and Conor Hale, Improvement Award.
The invocation was delivered by Madison Thomas. The class gift was presented by Kyle Blankenship and Conor Hale. The class history was written and presented by Sam Spadaccini and Caitlin Blankenship, and the benediction was delivered by Jae Cho.
