Four area high school juniors recently attended the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference at Valley Forge. Mary Ball Washington Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation sponsored the four students.
Full scholarships were given by: the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution to Joey Rudolph of Lancaster High School; Kiwanis of the Northern Neck to Adam Parker of Northumberland High School; Ruby Lee Norris Memorial Scholarship to Brett Fochtmann of Middlesex High School; and full funding by contributions from local businesses, private citizens, and membership dues from the Mary Ball Washington Chapter to Chelsea Hall of Middlesex High School.
One of the highlights of the many activities during their four-day stay was the Mock Congress debate where students debated segments of the Patriot Act as they weighed issues of freedom vs. security. This exercise demonstrated to the students how Congress debates and amends bills.
Students from California, Texas, Alabama, Utah and Florida as well as Virginia attended this session of the conference. Other sessions will be held in late March and in April.
