On March 12, “Step Afrika!” entertained and inspired Ware students and special guests, the Pre-K4 and kindergarten students from Grace Episcopal School of Yorktown,  with an irrepressible, energetic show full of knee-slaps and flat-footed stomps!

Step Afrika!, a DC-based company, celebrates “stepping,” an art form born at African-American fraternities and based in African traditions. The students were led through stepping lessons and were told stories about the origins of stepping.

As the first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika!’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pounded the gym floor and filled the air at Ware.

“The performance was electrifying,” said Tom Thomas, head of school at Ware. “The students left the gym with a new-found rhythm in their step—no pun intended.”
