School meal prices to increase

by Larry S. Chowning

Like everything else, the cost of public school meals is going up.

Middlesex School Superintendent Rusty Fairheart reported at the July 14 school board meeting the cost of fuel is driving up the prices of almost everything—including the cost of school lunches and breakfasts. “The increases in food costs are reflected in the grocery stores,” said Fairheart.

The price hike means breakfast at Middlesex Elementary School will increase from $1.25 to $1.40, and lunches from $1.75 to $2 in the coming school year. St. Clare Walker Middle School and Middlesex High School will increase the cost of breakfast from $1.25 to $1.40, and lunches from $2 to $2.25.

All adult meal prices will increase from $2.75 to $3, and milk at all schools will jump from 40 cents to 50 cents.

In other matters, the board:

    • Voted to appropriate last year’s balance of the textbook fund, $134,840, for use this year in buying books. The elementary school gets $67,420 and the secondary textbook fund gets the same amount.
    • Voted to appoint board chairman Richard Shores as the voting delegate to the Virginia School Board Association and named Jim Goforth the alternate.
    • Voted to approve fall MHS sports schedules for JV and varsity volleyball, JV and varsity football, golf, and girls and boys cross-country.
