RI Academy banquet is Saturday at Immanuel
The Rappahannock Industrial Academy Alumni Association will hold its Annual Meeting and Banquet on Saturday, August 8, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 301 Town Bridge Road, Saluda.
This annual event celebrates the history and legacy of the RI Academy, a church-run school for African-Americans that operated from 1902 to 1948. This year’s event will feature a ceremony recognizing the emeritus status of the officers and board members of the alumni association, as well as the installation of new officers.
The RI Academy Alumni Association has awarded college scholarships to outstanding high school seniors in King and Queen, Essex and Middlesex counties for 31 years. For the first 26 years, one scholarship was awarded each year with the scholarship rotating from county to county. However, in each year since 2005 the group has awarded a $1,000 scholarship in each of the three counties. In 2008 the association made the decision to make the scholarship available for sophomore year renewal for the class of 2009 and subsequent classes.
This year’s banquet will recognize the 2009 winners: Ashae Burnett of Saluda, George Wright of Tappahannock and Danielle Coleman of St. Stephens Church.
Tickets are $20, and the public is invited. To reserve a seat or for further information call 540-220-7462.
