RI Academy alumni honor scholarship winners
The Rappahannock Industrial (RI) Academy Alumni Association held its annual meeting and banquet recently at Essex Intermediate School. The association celebrates the history and legacy of the RI Academy, a private boarding school for African Americans that was in operation from 1902 to 1948.
The RI Academy primarily served students from Essex, King and Queen, and Middlesex counties, and the association has awarded scholarships to students from these three counties since 1978. Prior scholarship winners were acknowledged at this year’s meeting. The first RI scholarship winner, Joyce Robb-Holmes (1978), was the featured speaker. Prior winners also in attendance were Cordelia Corbin Smith (1982), Faye Bundy Jones (1984), and Danielle Latimore (1995).
The 2013 scholarship winners were introduced at the event. They are Viola Thompson of Essex County, Anisha Carter of King and Queen County, and Kabri Young of Middlesex County. G. Iesha Lee of Middlesex County, a 2012 recipient whose scholarship has been renewed for the upcoming year, also was introduced.
