Middlesex County Public Schools welcomes 16 new teachers in the 2010-2011 school year. Two came south from Michigan, another is from New York, one came from Cleveland, and another moved down from Pennsylvania.

Among the new faces is a gymnast of 15 years, a swimmer who competed for 19 years, and one teacher who is proud to say she has never been on an air plane. One rides a motorcycle, another runs marathon races of 26.2 miles, and one served in the Peace Corps.

Following is an introduction to these new teachers who will play a vital role in the Middlesex community.

Middlesex Elementary
Middlesex Elementary has 6 new teachers. Lindsay Witt will teach kindergarten and first grade special education. Witt is a native of Newport News. She expects to receive her master’s degree in December from Old Dominion University. She earned her bachelor’s at Christopher Newport University. She has a 95-pound German shepherd.

Chris Walker of King William will teach physical education and coach football at Middlesex High School. His bachelor’s degree is in health and physical education from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Megan Stevens is from Gloucester and will teach third grade. She graduated from Radford University with a bachelor’s degree in May, 2010. Stevens was a gymnast for 15 years.

Sarah Hunt is from Rochester, N.Y. She will teach students with autism in grades K-5. Hunt received her master’s degree from Nazareth College of Rochester in 2009. Her bachelor’s degree is from Washington and Jefferson College. Hunt is 6 feet 2 inches tall and played basketball in college and loves the sport.

Ashley Hazelgrove of Richmond will teach kindergarten. She received her bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies from Radford in 2010. She has never been on a plane, “which is good because I hate heights.”

Kim Waite of Christchurch will teach fourth grade. She holds a master’s of education degree from Old Dominion University and a bachelor’s degree from UVa.

St. Clare Walker
St. Clare Walker Middle School welcomes 5 new teachers.

Laura Norris, originally from West Point, will teach Algebra I and will coach the MHS JV volleyball team. She is a graduate of Longwood University.

Susan Dize, a Middlesex native, will teach sixth grade special education. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 2006 and Rappahannock Community College in 2002. She volunteers with the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Anne Somerville, who hails from Leland, Michigan, with teach eighth grade English and civics. She graduated from Northern Michigan University. She runs in marathon races of 26.2 miles.
Elizabeth Wilkins of Kil-marnock will teach seventh grade language arts. In 2009 she earned a master’s of education degree from James Madison University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary liberal studies in 2008. Wilkins met Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones.

Holly Braly of Lancaster will teach Algebra I. She is a UVa graduate. She loves the beach and traveling. She spends most of her free time working on projects at her home.

Middlesex High
There will be 5 new teachers at Middlesex High School.

Colleen Nolan will teach special education. Nolan is from Annandale in Northern Virginia. She hold BS degrees in elementary education and special education from York College in Pennsylvania. She has been on a swim team for 19 years.

Katie Kaskey of Cleveland holds a bachelor’s degree from Miami University. She will teach Spanish. Kaskey served in the Peace Corps for 3 years.

Kristen Seely of Gloucester will teach business and information technology in grades 9-12. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelors degree in human resource management in 2008; and with a master’s degree in career and technical education in 2010.

Shannan Jacobs of Quinton will teach Spanish. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University and attended the University of Barcelona, Spain. She rides a motorcycle.

Ashley Nowak of Manistee, Michigan will teach special education. She has a BS degree in education from Central Michigan University (2008), and is working on her masters in curriculum and instruction (learning disabilities). Nowak drove 15 hours from Michigan to be in Middlesex.
