“Swim for Haiti,” a local kid-driven fundraiser initiated by Chesapeake Academy seventh-grade students in partnership with the Northern Neck YMCA, will be held on Saturday, February 13, at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Kilmarnock.
All proceeds from the morning event will be donated to the International Red Cross to help alleviate the suffering of earthquake victims and rebuild Haiti.
“Any kid between the ages of 5 to 14 can participate,” explained seventh-grader Anna Moore. “To raise money, you pre-register and then get family, friends and neighbors to sponsor you to swim laps for $10, $20 or $50.
Kids will swim for no more than 15 consecutive minutes and are welcome to use swim aids, flippers, or kickboards.
“On top of that, we have a donor who will give an additional $1,000 if everyone combined swims a total of one thousand laps!” Moore added. “Chesapeake Bank has stepped forward to support the $1,000 lap challenge, offering encouragement for kids in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula to join in this special fundraising event designed just for them.”
Swimmers are needed. “You don’t have to be a great or even a good swimmer to take part in this fundraiser,” noted classmate Madison Owens, adding, “You just have to be somebody with a big heart who wants to help.”
Registration and sponsorship forms are available at the welcome desk of the Northern Neck YMCA, at the front desk of Chesapeake Academy, online at http://www.chesapeakeacademy.org, or by emailing athletic director Cynthia Walker at . All registration forms must be returned to the YMCA or Chesapeake Academy by 5 p.m. on February 8.
Pre-registered kids bring their sponsorship forms and collected money to the YMCA on Saturday, February 13, at their pre-established swim times (designated on the registration forms).
The Northern Neck YMCA is providing lifeguard staff and will be supported by a large group of dedicated adult volunteers who will help patrol the swim lanes and count laps.
In addition to kids swimming laps, a collection box for spontaneous donations in support of the “Swim for Haiti” fundraiser will be positioned at the entrance to YMCA Aquatic Center pool as well as in the lobby of the Northern Neck YMCA all day on Saturday, February 13.
Sponsors are also needed. Those individuals or businesses wishing to sponsor swimmers for $10, $20, or $50 can do so by contacting Julia Zimmerman at 804-438-5575 or by emailing .
