Middlesex Elementary School (MES) student Kaitlyn Barney won first place in the elementary division of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Eastern Regional Art Contest held on April 18 at Colonial Beach Elementary School.

“Local school board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2018 winners,” said Middlesex County School Superintendent Dr. Peter Gretz.

Pinetop District school board member Garland Harrow said, “This is the second year in a row an MES student has taken first place in this competition. We are so proud of our outstanding art teachers and our wonderful students.”

The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia’s public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

The winning art is framed and displayed in the offices of the VSBA in Charlottesville and the Richmond offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
