MES begins reading project

| Fourth-graders hold copies of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” the book all MES families will read during the month of February for MES’ One School One Book celebration. |
This February there will be a lot of penguins in Middlesex County.
Students, parents, caregivers, and the staff of Middlesex Elementary School will be reading “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard and Florence Atwater from February 1-29.
Every family at MES will receive a copy of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and every family will read the book at home together in February. The book was sent home with students on February 1, and families and staff will follow the same schedule, reading one chapter each night. The goal is for parents to read this book aloud to their children.
Daily trivia questions will be asked at school about the chapter read on the previous night, and the children can win small incentives, donated by the MES PTO and by local businesses, for correct responses. The staff at MES has planned many other fun activities that will coordinate with the book, including a visit by a real penguin from the Richmond Zoo!
This event, called One School One Book, originated several years ago and has been used in schools all across the United States. The purpose of One School One Book is to create a shared reading experience within the elementary school and the community.
Susan Swift, reading specialist, says the staff of MES is excited and invites anyone in the community to read along with them. Please see the school website at mcps.k12.va.us for the nightly reading assignments and listen to 99.1 FM at 6:45 a.m. for daily trivia questions beginning on February 2.
