National Junior Honor Society members from St. Clare Walker (SCW) Middle School chose to serve their community on the afternoon of May 18, by picking up litter along Gen. Puller Highway in Deltaville. With support from dean of students Jamie Wynberry and some young helpers, they marched up the sides of the road filling 31 orange bags with refuse and collecting one old discarded tire. The students have scheduled another pick-up on June 7 in the Saluda area.

According to Wynberry, “We faced challenges such as encounters by a raccoon, several dogs, and falling in ditches. However, fun was had by all, and I overheard one student say, ‘People just don’t realize how bad littering is. Even if you just throw one thing out, it really adds up after a while.’ “

The Keep Middlesex Beautiful Committee, on behalf of the community, extends its gratitude to the students and their helpers for demonstrating their commitment to a more beautiful Middlesex County. The committee also urges all of Middlesex to show its appreciation for the work of these students and others who work tirelessly to clean up our roadsides by resisting the urge to toss litter onto the roadside. Committee member Celane Roden said, “Save your trash for trash bins and cover your truck beds when taking refuse to the convenience stations.”

The KMB Committee also encourages other community groups who organize litter pick-ups to send photos of your group to our Facebook page. Every litter pick-up event helps keep our county clean and encourages others to do the same.
