Christchurch wins math contest

From left, Robbie Hu, Han Zhang and Joshua Fitzhugh of Christchurch School won gold medallions in RCC’s annual Team Math Contest.
This year’s Team Math Contest on December 11 at both Rappahannock Community College campuses was entered by 50 area students. Colonial Beach, Lancaster, New Kent and West Point high schools, and the Glenns site of the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School, each sent a team of three students; King William, Northumberland, and Rappahannock (Richmond County) high schools, the Warsaw site of the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School, and the private schools of Christchurch (Middlesex County) and St. Margaret’s (Essex County) each sent two teams of two or three students.

The contest, organized by RCC mathematics instructor Nicolle Lee, consisted of 20 highly-challenging questions that tested several branches of mathematics—geometry, algebra and pre-calculus. Each team worked together to solve the problems under the supervision of a proctor, and the teams had 60 minutes to complete as many questions as possible. “The contest is more of a thinking test, than one covering actual subject material,” said Lee.

Placing first to win gold commemorative medallions were Joshua Fitzhugh, Hengyu “Robbie” Hu, and Han Zhang of Christchurch School.

The silver and bronze medallions went to the two teams from St. Margaret’s School: Sujin An, Yi Chia Houng and MengFan Sun in second place, and Hsuan “Amelia” Chen, GeMin Park and Linh Tran in third. Hu, An and Houng are all returning to the contest from winning performances last year.

Certificates of participation were mailed to all students who attended.
