C. Herbert Brown Jr. Scholarship established

The board of directors of Arts Alive Inc. is proud to announce that Arts Alive will offer a scholarship in memory of founder, president and director C. Herbert Brown Jr.

After Mr. Brown’s death of multiple myeloma in August of this year, the Brown family suggested donations to Arts Alive Inc. in lieu of flowers. More than $5,000 was donated in his memory, and the board would like to honor Mr. Brown’s memory by giving back to the community he loved.

Arts Alive welcomes Leigh Brown, Mr. Brown’s daughter from West Point, who has agreed to finish Mr. Brown’s term as director of Arts Alive Inc.

As Arts Alive Inc’s first president, Mr. Brown helped expand programming from performances in the Robinson/Olsson Civic Auditorium and Fine Arts Center to art exhibits and workshops, and children’s summer camps in drama and fine arts.

A Gloucester native, Herb grew up playing the piano, and graduated with a piano major from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music at Dayton. He also earned a master’s degree in education from VCU.

After serving as the band and choral director at Middlesex High School, Mr. Brown, formerly of Saluda, went to West Point High School to serve as the assistant principal and band and choral director in 1967. He retired from West Point High in 1993, but continued to share his talents by playing at weddings, parties, and other events, as well as serving as organist in many churches throughout the area. His love of children and music was evident to all who knew him, and this scholarship honors his life by honoring his loves.

The C. Herbert Brown Jr. Fine Arts Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from the Arts Alive service area of the counties of King William, New Kent, King and Queen, and the Town of West Point. The graduating senior must be planning to major in fine arts in college.

Donations to the scholarship fund will be accepted annually by Arts Alive Inc. Donation amounts will determine the amount of the award given, which Arts Alive plans to give yearly for as long as possible.

To make a donation toward the C. Herbert Brown Jr. Fine Arts Scholarship, please mail a check to Arts Alive Inc., P.O. Box 152, West Point, VA 23181. Include a note designating the contribution to be for the scholarship fund, or make a note on the memo portion of the check. To pay by credit card, contact Beth Dandridge, coordinator, by phone at 804-843-3475 or email for payment procedures.
