The Bland Music Scholarship Competition was hosted by area Lions Clubs at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield last Saturday.

“The musical talent was exceptional this year,” said a Lions spokesperson.

Saturday’s competition was the first step, or “local level,” and the winners at this level will now compete at the “regional level” on March 25 at Christ United Methodist Church in Newport News.

The clubs  were fortunate to have the following qualified judges: Linda Douglas, Mary Alice Eubank and Aaron Ward.

“We had a wonderful crowd and a wonderful contest thanks to the participants, their families, judges and all others  who helped to make the Bland contest a success,” said the spokesperson.

In all, 20 students participated in the competition. Contestants were from the Middlesex, Mathews, Lancaster and Richmond  counties.
