After-school enrichment program a huge success

by Principal Jeannie Duke

The idea was simple. I wanted to offer an after-school program to students that would give them opportunities to expand their knowledge and to do something fun after school that they might otherwise not get the chance to do.

While the idea was a simple one, the organization and management of it was certainly beyond simple. With the blessing of Mr. Fairheart and Dr. Lane, this little seed of an idea blossomed into reality. Clubs were organized, volunteers were secured, materials were purchased, transportation was offered, and off we went!

Students were offered the following clubs: Photography, Art, Fitness, Scrap-booking, Drama, Math, Going Green, American Sign Language, French, Science and Baton Twirling. The response was overwhelming and 172 students participated in the first-ever enrichment opportunity at MES!

Special thanks go to the following employees, parents and MHS students for volunteering their time after school to make the after-school enrichment program a success: Barbara Staib, Jessie Gomez, Billie Eubank, Kathy Ruark, Rebecca Panis, Dixie Doerr, Morgan Duke, Kelsey Hainley, Melissa Hall, Maria Johnson, Samantha Rozakis, Matt Owens, Russell Hall and other members of the MHS Drama Club, Lanette Beebe, Sara Beam, Amanda Guzick, Danielle Hudson, Whitney Hixenbaugh and Julie Slusher.

Plans are already under way for next year’s enrichment clubs, so if there are any volunteers in the community who have a special talent they would like to share with our elementary students, call Jeannie Duke at 758-2496.
