Deltaville man earns diploma at age 77
Robert Tabler stuttered when he spoke. Children made fun of him all through his school years. One day the teacher asked him to read out loud. Of course, the students snickered. He had reached his breaking point. Tabler closed the book and walked out.

Christchurch School celebrated its 90th commencement exercises on Saturday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. under the great red oak on Headmaster’s Hill, overlooking the Rappahannock River. Headmaster John E. Byers addressed the class, and in what has become a special tradition, he addressed the 60 graduates one-by-one.

On May 11, at Rappahannock Community College’s 40th Commencement ceremony, college officials bestowed 571 degrees and certificates on the 264 members of the Class of 2012. “This is a significant time in the history of the college,” said RCC president Dr. Elizabeth Crowther. “We are experiencing unprecedented growth, student attainment, and community training.”

Portia Johnson of Saluda is retiring this year after 39 years of teaching elementary education in the Middlesex County Public School System. Mrs. Johnson was educated in the county system, one of just a few African-Americans who in the early years of (freedom of choice) integration attended the mostly white county schools.
