The Fishing Line with Billy Pipkin
This month we will find anglers heading to the water for the most diverse fishing of the year. Anglers are catching Spanish mackerel, bluefish, cobia, spadefish, flounder, whiting, speckled trout, grey trout, spot, croaker and more.
07.30.2009Fishing on the Fly
“In this style of fishing, the main fish we catch is the striped bass, which we call rockfish locally, but there is a variety of other fish we will catch in the summer time,” said Newsome. "I took a count one time, and I had caught about 23 different species in the Chesapeake Bay on a fly rod, so you never know what you are going to bring into the boat.”
07.01.2009Taken away with the Dragon Run
I push off from shore, breaking gravity’s grip. A thin layer of water floats me away from reality and into a magical world that humans can only visit. The instant my kayak floats, I know I am “there.” It‘s a feeling of freedom from the land and the problems that stay on shore. The lazy river takes over. I fall under the spell of the Dragon Run.
07.01.2009Welcome to Deltaville
In 1909 the U.S. Postal Service accepted a local recommendation to change the name of a Chesapeake Bay community, and Sandy Bottom became Deltaville. Deltaville’s history, however, goes back much further than 100 years. In 1608, the year after Jamestown was settled, a group of English explorers led by Captain John Smith came upon the community while exploring the tributaries of the Bay.
