The 14th annual Tour de Chesapeake on Friday and Saturday, May 18-19, will feature the “Bike, Band and Bay Festival” in Mathews County. This year the Mathews Land Conservancy and the Mathews Visitor Center are teaming up to host the annual cycling event that in the past was sponsored by Bike Virginia.

There’s an historical marker along James Monroe Highway in Westmoreland County, just east of Colonial Beach. In a brief paragraph, it marks the birthplace and importance of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. Behind the marker, down a gravel road and hidden from passersby, is a new brick building chock full of memorabilia honoring the man responsible for the Monroe Doctrine.
