With more than 200 miles of shoreline to explore, Mathews County is a paradise for kayakers and other boaters. The Mathews Maritime Heritage Trail documents the history of the East River, which had three wharfs that were essential for commerce up until the last century. While huge wharfs are but relics of the past, many historic houses, built with money earned from the water, dot the shore.
