Virginia E.D. Goss

Virginia Elizabeth (Betty) Davis Goss of Aroda died March 24, 2010 at Mountain View Nursing Home in Aroda.

Mrs. Goss was born November 25, 1916, in Arlington County to David Malcolm and Adelia Fought Davis and moved to White Stone in 1923. A graduate of White Stone High School, she was graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s and a master’s in horticulture. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.

She married Lee Adelbert Goss in White Stone on August 29, 1942.  Most of her life was spent at her home on Tabbs Creek where she raised beef cattle and enjoyed gardening. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister, Helen Davis Dietz, and her brothers, David Porter Davis and Charles Willis Davis Sr.

A longtime member of White Stone United Methodist Church, she served on the Interfaith Council.  She volunteered as a docent at Historic Christ Church and as a “pink lady” at Rappahannock General Hospital. She also served as an Election Official and a member of the Lancaster County Electoral Board. She and her husband, Lee, were charter members of Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club and of Tabbs Creek Association. She was a member of the White Stone Woman’s Club. 

She is survived by her daughter, Adele G. Shotwell and husband Alan of Rapidan; her son, William S. Goss and wife Diane of White Stone; grandchildren, Sheila Adele Goss of White Stone, Frank M. Shotwell and wife Abby of Madison, Wis., Stephen Shotwell of Tokyo, Japan, Suzanne S. Goodrich and husband Erik of Honolulu, Hawaii, Maeghaen L. Goss of Urbanna, and Sara Shotwell of Greensboro, N.C.; step-grandchildren, Rachel D. Gaghan of Broadway, and Kevin E. Gaghan of Fairfax; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her cheerful, kind, generous and gentle nature.

Her family and friends will celebrate her life with a memorial service at White Stone United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 15, at 2 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to White Stone United Methodist Church or to your favorite charity.
