Sally Emerson Kerns, 43, of Gloucester died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 peacefully at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Sally was a 1985 graduate of Gloucester High School and volunteered many years with the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad. She was currently a probation officer with Middle Peninsula Local Probation and Pretrial Services.

Sally will be remembered for her sweet smile and has left a void that can never be filled. You will live in our hearts forever.

In 1987 her father, Sheriff Ruben F. Emerson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Lewis Kerns; son, Nicholas Kerns; daughter, Ariana Kerns; mother, Virginia S. Emerson; brother, Christopher Emerson; uncles, Jim Smith and Clarence Smith; special friends, Kristen Schomburg and Tina Emerson; and her loving canine companion Rosie.

Funeral services officiated by Reverend Chester Brown was held Saturday, May 1, at Bethany United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery where Sally was laid beside her beloved grandmother, Annie Smith.

The family received friends Friday, April 30, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

Following the interment, a reception was held in the Warren Belvin Fellowship Hall of Bethany United Methodist Church.
