Richard W. Sprouse Sr.

Richard Walter Sprouse Sr. passed away on Monday December 16, 2013 in Sun City Center, Florida. He was born in Gastonia, N.C., on November 16, 1925 and moved with his family to Chesterfield County as a young boy where he attended Manchester High School and later Smithdeal Massey Business College.

He was a disabled veteran of WWII, where he proudly served in Europe in Company H, 253 Regiment of the 63rd Infantry Division, in the Seventh Army. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their actions during the Buchhof-Stein Battles.

After the war, he started several small businesses in his early career and became a real estate broker and owner of Sprouse Realty Inc. Richard’s civic involvement included being a life-long member of the Disabled American Veterans; a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 137; member and past president of the Dale Ruritan Club; and member and twice president of the Dale Volunteer Fire Department. He was a founder and chairman of the board of the Bank of Chesterfield, which later became Jefferson Bank Shares. He was a past member of the Woodland Heights/Manchester Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a past member of Branch’s Baptist Church and charter member of Southside Baptist Church. He resided in Chesterfield for more than 50 years before retiring to Sun City Center, Florida. He was an avid fisherman and coin collector and a past member of Meadowbrook County Club. He especially loved his time on the Rappahannock River at his Urbanna river home.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William Walter Sprouse and Macie Payseur Sprouse, and brothers, Charles, James and Keith Wayne Sprouse. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nellie Winkler “Winkie” Wright Sprouse; two daughters, Constance (Ray) Sorrel, and Pamela (Kirk) Thomason; a son, Richard W. (Melanie) Sprouse Jr.; three stepchildren and their spouses, James (Carolyn) Wright, Thomas, Edward and Wright and Judith Herring; three grandchildren, Ian Richard Sprouse, Clair Roberts Thomason, and James Luke Thomason; and step-grandchildren, Charles Edward Wright, Christina Wright Myllykangas, and Bradley and Clayton Herring; his brother, Raymond “Buddy” (Frankie) Sprouse; sister, Iona Sprouse Reiordan; and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends on December 19at Sun City Center Funeral Home, Sun City Center, Fla. a funeral service with military honors was held December 20at Sun City Christian Center, Wimauma, Fla. Burial was at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
