He was born in Mountain View, Okla., on January 9, 1924 into a farm family of six sons and one daughter.
Paul graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1949 with a BS in engineering administration. He also earned a master’s degree from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, in Washington, D.C.
A civil engineer, Paul enjoyed a highly-distinguished civil service career culminating in a nearly 40-year assignment in the Pentagon as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations and Housing). In this position, he was responsible for all aspects of family housing and real property at Army installations worldwide.
Paul was a veteran of the Korean War during which he trained Combat Engineer units at Ft McCoy, Wis. He retired from the US Army Reserves Corps of Engineers at the rank of Colonel.
Surviving Paul is his wife, Grace Parker; daughter, Kirstie Barkley and her husband Gary of Catlett; son, Paul Johnson Jr. and his wife Mary of Fredericksburg; daughter, Kimberly Wuckovich and her husband Nick of Fredericksburg; daughter-in-law, Mary Johnson, of Charlotte, N,C.; and stepson, Bentley Parker-Brown of Richmond.
Paul was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren, Gary Barkley Jr. of Remington, Pamela Novosel of Catlett, Beth Rogers of Spotsylvania, Paul Johnson III of Chesapeake, Stephen Johnson of Fredericksburg, Riki Johnson of Charlotte, N.C., Lauren Johnson of Oxford, Miss., Kelly Johnson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Zoe Wuckovich and Nick Wuckovich of Fredericksburg. Paul was great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Aguirre, Hailey Aguirre, Alyssa Parks, Calista Johnson and Mason Barkely. He is also survived by three brothers, Lynn Johnson of Grant’s Pass, Ore., Nelson Johnson of Tulsa, Okla., and Robert Johnson of Ridge Crest, Cal.
Also predeceasing him was his first wife of 44 years, Martha Gwin; and his son, Gregory Johnson.
Services to celebrate Paul’s life will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, at Christ Church Parish (Middlesex) at 2 p.m.
