Nancy Leigh Richardson, 97, a lifelong resident of King and Queen County, died Sunday, February 17, 2013.  She was born on September 15, 1915 in King and Queen County to the late David Hunter Bland and Chrystal Leigh.

Nancy Leigh grew up at her family home in Plain View.  She was a graduate of Pleasant Hill High School and attended Farmville State Teachers College from 1932 to 1936 (now Longwood University).  She taught fifth grade at Pleasant Hill School in King & Queen County.

In 1946 Nancy and her husband opened a ready-to-wear business called Richardson’s in West Point.  She worked there for 55 years.

In 2008, Nancy Leigh was inducted for membership by special invitation into Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for woman.  Nancy Leigh was the niece of Ruby Leigh Orgain, one of the nine women who founded Zeta Tau Alpha in 1898 at the state Female Normal School (now Longwood University).

She was a lifelong member of Shackelfords Chapel United Methodist Church.  She loved her church and enjoyed fellowship.

Nancy Leigh was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel McGill Richardson.

She is survived by her son Samuel McGill “Mac” Richardson Jr. (Karen), a daughter Chrystal Welch (Larry); and grandchildren Hunter Richardson, Nancy Jadatz (Steve), Brent Welch (Melissa), David Welch (Candice).

The family wants to recognize the dedicated staff at Gloucester House that provided loving support and service to her the last seven years of her life.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 21, at Shackelfords Chapel United Methodist Church, 3727 Buena Vista Road, Shacklefords, VA 23156.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA 23181.
