Mary Lou MacKimm

Mary Lou MacKimm

Mary Lou MacKimm, 88, formerly of Camden, Maine, died Monday, April 23, 2018 at Commonwealth Assisted Living, Kilmarnock, after a long period of declining health. Born August 27, 1929 in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of Charles R. Davis and Louise (Stoltz) Mains.

Mary Lou was a special lady known for her kindness, cheerful nature, sincere interest in others and quick wit. She graduated from Georgetown University School of Nursing where she earned her RN. After graduation, she worked at the Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, Bermuda. It was in Bermuda where she met the love of her life, Alexander (Sandy) MacKimm, who was serving in the U.S. Navy as a pilot. They were married December 14, 1953 in Washington, D.C., and moved to Chicago, Ill., to start their family. During her husband’s career, Mary Lou and Sandy transferred their growing family from Chicago to Kalamazoo, Mich., Waterville, Maine, Sudbury, Mass. (twice), and Hinsdale and Barrington, Illinois.

She was the consummate homemaker, always ensuring that her family was quickly established after one of their many moves. It was during those years in New England that Mary Lou and her family established a deep fondness for Maine. For many years, the MacKimm family enjoyed spending summers at their camp on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes region. Mary Lou and Sandy retired to Camden, Maine, in 1986 where they had a rich and fulfilling life. Mary Lou lived in Camden for 31 years—25 years on the Lily Pond, followed by 6 years at Quarry Hill before moving in 2017 to Kilmarnock to be closer to one of her daughters.

Surviving are her five children, Melissa A. MacKimm and husband Randy Bozarth of Hardyville; James I. MacKimm, wife Suzanne and daughter Jessica of Windham, N.H.; Mark D. MacKimm, wife Belinda, daughter Allie, son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Sarah MacKimm of Rome, Ga., Memphis, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga., respectively; Megan M. Captain, son Luke and daughter Lauren of Barrington, Illinois, and Chicago, Illinois, respectively; and Elizabeth A. Shee and husband Bradley, Liberty, Missouri. She also is survived by a brother, James Rodgers and his wife Sue of Altoona, Pa. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander J. MacKimm; and son-in-law, William Reed Captain.

There will be a memorial mass at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 16, at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union Street, Camden, Maine, with Fr. Robert Vailancourt officiating. A reception will be held later that day from 4-6 p.m. at Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill.
