Mary Ellen Scott
Mary Ellen Scott was born on May 8, 1926 to the late Willard Braxton and the late Lomie Brooks Braxton of King and Queen. On Saturday, July 26, 2014, at around 6:30 p.m., God whispered into Mary’s ear and she gracefully answered His call.
At a very early age, she joined Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, King and Queen, and years later joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, Church View. Mary was educated in the King and Queen County Public School System.
She married the late Garland Carter, and out of this union eight children were born (two preceded her in death, Mertine Carter and Edith Carter). She married the late Harry Reed and out of this union three children were born and 10 step-children were gained (six preceded her in death, Harry Reed, Soney Reede, Lewis Reed, Jeff Reed, Robert Reed (Diane living), and Laverta Scott. Later, she married the late Melvin Scott and gained two step-children.
She sung with various choirs. The Starlights Gospel Chorus, the New Mount Zion Chorus, and the Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Chorus, just to name a few. She was also a deaconess for many years. Mary became a watch care member of Make-A-Way. There, she held the position of “Church Mother.” Mary loved to sit in her recliner and sing gospel hymns. She also loved her family very much and she loved the Lord!
Preceding Mary in death were four sisters, Irene Garnett, Virginia Brooks, Grace Braxton and Hattie Brooks; and three brothers, Edward Brooks, Willard Brooks and Gilbert Braxton.
Cherishing her sweet memories are six daughters, Caroline Holmes, Mary Carter, Mollie Jackson (Harry), Nannie Harris, Virginia Ward (Robert) and Irene Reed; three sons, Willard Carter (Ann), Robert Carter (Dorothy), Garland Carter (Loretta); seven loving step-children, Marceline Reed, Elizabeth McKellop, Nelson Reed, William Reed, Roberta Carter, Cora Scott and Earl Thomas Jones; one dear sister, Lillian Booker Johnson; a caring mother-in-law, Ella Scott; a special nephew, Eddie Braxton (Lorraine); a beloved cousin, Alfred Booker; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Our sincerest appreciation for the thoughtfulness presented to us and the love we have been given during our time of bereavement. May God bless you!
A home-going celebration was held August 2 at Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Baptist Church, Remlik. Apostle Jesse Ransom officiated. Prophet Edna Ransom officiated at the interment at New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Gloucester.
