Larry Stone Shores Sr., 68, of Urbanna died Wednesday, July 22, 2009. He was the son of the late Elmer and Edith Shores of Urbanna and Tangier Island. 

As an entrepreneur, Mr. Shores was co-founder and previous owner of Shores & Ruark Seafood Co. Inc. of Urbanna as well as proprietor of several other local businesses with his sons and others.

The Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation honored Mr. Shores in 2000 as a Co-Captain of the 43rd annual Urbanna Oyster Festival along with Rufus Ruark, the two founders of Shores and Ruark Seafood.

Mr. Shores was an early pioneer in establishing youth sports in the county. He organized and coached the Urbanna Midgets, later named the Urbanna Colts, a championship youth football team complete with cheerleaders that played in the Lower Northern Neck Midget Football League in 1966-67.

He was the widower of Barbara Ann Verlander Shores.  He is survived by his sons, Larry S. Shores Jr. and his wife Jill, and Lance S. Shores and his wife Wendy, and four grandchildren, Stone, Taylor Grace, Lauren Leigh and Meghan, all of Urbanna; a sister, Diane S. Ruark of Deltaville; two brothers, Dr. David L. Shores of Virginia Beach, and Dr. Richard J. Shores of Urbanna.

Memorial services were held Friday in Urbanna United Methodist Church. Interment was private.
